BioChem™️ Ceramides NP

Ceramides are lipid (fat) molecules naturally found in the skin’s outer layer (stratum corneum).
They make up around 50% of the skin’s barrier and help hold skin cells together, maintaining a strong and healthy moisture barrier.
In skincare, ceramides are often plant-derived or synthetic and used to restore the skin’s protective layer.

Benefits

  1. Strengthens Skin Barrier

    • Helps seal in moisture and protect against environmental irritants.

  2. Hydration

    • Prevents water loss (transepidermal water loss, TEWL), keeping skin plump.

  3. Soothes Irritation

    • Calms redness, dryness, and sensitivity.

  4. Supports Anti-Aging

    • A strong barrier reduces fine lines caused by dehydration.

  5. Boosts Tolerance to Actives

    • Makes skin more resilient to potent ingredients like retinoids or acids.

Uses

  • Common concentration:

    • Often part of moisturizers and serums (percentages vary; usually 0.5–1% for active blends).

  • Application:

    • Can be used AM and PM, after serums and before sunscreen (AM) or as the last step at night.

  • Pairs well with:

    • Hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, peptides, fatty acids.

  • Best for:

    • Dry, sensitive, or compromised skin; post-treatment recovery.

FDA Cautions & Safety

  • FDA Status:

    • Considered a cosmetic ingredient in the U.S.; no prescription needed.

    • Not regulated as a drug unless medical claims are made (e.g., “treats eczema” without FDA drug approval).

  • Potential Side Effects:

    • Very low irritation risk; generally considered safe for all skin types, including children.

  • Cautions:

    • None significant for general cosmetic use.

    • For medical-grade ceramide treatments (e.g., for eczema), product labeling and claims must comply with FDA drug regulations.
