BioChem™️ 10% Azelaic Acid

  • Azelaic acid is a naturally occurring dicarboxylic acid found in grains like barley, wheat, and rye, and also produced by skin’s microbiome.

  • In skincare, it is synthetically formulated for stability and purity.

  • At 15% concentration, it is typically a prescription-strength topical used for certain skin conditions (lower strengths like 10% are usually over-the-counter).

Benefits

  1. Reduces inflammation – Helpful in calming redness and irritation.

  2. Treats acne – Unclogs pores, reduces bacterial growth (Cutibacterium acnes), and prevents future breakouts.

  3. Improves hyperpigmentation – Fades post-acne marks, melasma, and uneven skin tone.

  4. Rosacea management – Decreases redness and bumps associated with rosacea.

  5. Gentler than many acids – Less irritating than strong AHAs or BHAs, safe for sensitive skin types.

Uses

  • Acne vulgaris treatment

  • Rosacea control (especially erythema and papules)

  • Hyperpigmentation fading and skin tone evening

  • Often applied once or twice daily depending on skin tolerance, usually in cream or gel form.

FDA Considerations

  • In the United States, 15% azelaic acid is available by prescription (e.g., brand name Finacea gel or foam).

  • Approved indications: mild-to-moderate rosacea and sometimes acne.

  • Must meet FDA drug manufacturing standards for purity, stability, and labeling.

  • Side effects: mild stinging, burning, or tingling may occur; rare allergic reactions should be monitored.

  • Contraindications: hypersensitivity to azelaic acid or any formulation excipients.
