BioChem™️ 5% Glycolic Acid

Glycolic acid is the smallest molecule in the alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) family, derived from sugarcane.
Because of its small size, it penetrates the skin efficiently, making it one of the most potent exfoliating acids in skincare.
It works by loosening the bonds between dead skin cells so they shed more easily.

Benefits

  1. Exfoliation & Smoother Skin

    • Removes dead skin cells, revealing fresher, softer skin.

  2. Brightening

    • Helps fade dark spots, post-acne marks, and sun damage.

  3. Anti-Aging Effects

    • Stimulates collagen production over time, improving fine lines and texture.

  4. Acne Support

    • Keeps pores clear, reducing blackheads and breakouts.

  5. Improved Absorption

    • Prepares skin to better absorb other active ingredients.

Uses

  • Typical concentrations:

    • OTC skincare: 2%–10% (toners, serums, cleansers)

    • Professional peels: 20%–70% (performed by licensed professionals)

  • Application:

    • Usually applied at night, 1–3 times a week to start; frequency can increase if tolerated.

  • Best paired with:

    • Hydrators (hyaluronic acid, glycerin) to offset dryness.

  • Avoid combining with strong retinoids or benzoyl peroxide in the same routine unless advised by a dermatologist.

FDA Cautions & Safety

  • FDA Status:

    • Glycolic acid is regulated as a cosmetic ingredient when used in lower OTC concentrations.

    • Higher concentrations (professional peels) are subject to stricter handling and labeling requirements.

    • The FDA notes that AHAs, including glycolic acid, increase sun sensitivity—SPF use is mandatory.

  • Potential Side Effects:

    • Redness, stinging, dryness, or peeling—especially in sensitive skin or with overuse.

  • Cautions:

    • Patch test before first use.

    • Avoid over-layering with other potent actives to prevent irritation.

    • Use daily sunscreen while using and for at least one week after discontinuation.
