BioChem™️ 1% Alpha Arbutin

Alpha arbutin is a synthetic, water-soluble derivative of hydroquinone.
It’s considered a skin-brightening ingredient that works by inhibiting tyrosinase, the enzyme responsible for melanin (pigment) production.
Compared to hydroquinone, it’s gentler and less likely to cause irritation, making it popular in over-the-counter brightening products.

Benefits

  1. Reduces Hyperpigmentation

    • Helps fade dark spots, melasma, post-acne marks, and uneven skin tone.

  2. Gentle Brightening

    • Suitable for most skin types, including sensitive skin.

  3. Evens Skin Tone

    • Promotes a clearer, more uniform complexion without bleaching healthy skin.

  4. Antioxidant Properties

    • Mildly protects skin from oxidative stress, although not as strongly as Vitamin C.

Uses

  • Typical concentration:

    • 1–2% in serums, creams, or lotions.

  • Application:

    • Can be used morning and/or evening after cleansing and before moisturizer.

    • Works well with Vitamin C, niacinamide, and hyaluronic acid.

  • Best for:

    • Pigmentation concerns, dull skin, and uneven tone.

FDA Cautions & Safety

  • FDA Status:

    • Alpha arbutin is considered a cosmetic ingredient in the U.S. and is not FDA-approved as a drug for skin lightening.

    • The FDA has issued warnings about hydroquinone in some products due to potential safety concerns, but alpha arbutin is generally regarded as safer and less irritating.

  • Potential Side Effects:

    • Low irritation risk; however, overuse or combining with strong exfoliants may cause redness or dryness.

    • Rare allergic reactions possible.

  • Cautions:

    • Products making strong “skin bleaching” or “permanent lightening” claims may be considered unapproved drugs under FDA rules.

    • Ingredient quality and purity can vary by manufacturer—low-quality alpha arbutin may degrade to hydroquinone if improperly stored.
