BioChem™️ 5% Benzoyl Peroxide

Benzoyl peroxide (BPO) is an antimicrobial and keratolytic agent commonly used to treat acne.
It works by:

  • Killing acne-causing bacteria (Cutibacterium acnes, formerly P. acnes)

  • Unclogging pores through mild exfoliation

  • Reducing inflammation in active breakouts

It’s available in over-the-counter (OTC) and prescription strengths in gels, creams, lotions, and washes.

Benefits

  1. Effective Against Acne

    • Works on both inflammatory (pimples, pustules) and non-inflammatory (blackheads, whiteheads) acne.

  2. Prevents Antibiotic Resistance

    • Often combined with topical or oral antibiotics to reduce bacterial resistance.

  3. Quick Onset of Action

    • Can show visible improvement in 2–4 weeks with consistent use.

  4. Suitable for Face & Body

    • Used on acne-prone areas like chest, back, and shoulders.

Uses

  • Typical concentrations:

    • OTC: 2.5%, 5%, 10% (2.5% often as effective with less irritation)

    • Prescription: higher strengths or combined with retinoids/antibiotics

  • Application:

    • Once or twice daily after cleansing; start with lower frequency to reduce irritation.

  • Forms:

    • Leave-on gels/creams or rinse-off cleansers.

FDA Cautions & Safety

  • FDA Status:

    • Benzoyl peroxide is monographed as an OTC acne treatment under the FDA Acne Drug Products Monograph (21 CFR Part 333, Subpart D).

    • It is considered safe and effective when used as directed.

  • Potential Side Effects:

    • Dryness, peeling, redness, and mild burning—especially when starting.

    • May bleach hair, towels, and clothing.

  • Rare FDA Warning (2014):

    • Very rare but serious allergic reactions or severe irritation can occur. FDA advises patch testing before first full use.

  • Cautions:

    • Avoid excessive sun exposure; use sunscreen.

    • Introduce gradually if combining with retinoids or strong acids to avoid over-irritation.
