BioChem™️ 1% Salicylic Acid

Salicylic acid is a beta hydroxy acid (BHA) derived from willow bark and related plants.
It’s oil-soluble, allowing it to penetrate into pores and dissolve excess sebum and dead skin cells—making it highly effective for acne-prone and oily skin.
It also has anti-inflammatory properties.

Uses

• Typical concentrations:

  • OTC leave-on products: 0.5%–2%

  • Cleansers: up to 2%

  • Professional peels: 20–30% (performed by trained professionals)

• Application:

  • Can be used daily in cleansers or 2–3 times/week in stronger leave-on treatments.

• Pairs well with:

  • Niacinamide (reduces irritation), hydrating serums.

• Avoid combining:

  • Strong retinoids, high-strength AHAs, or benzoyl peroxide in the same routine unless under professional guidance.

FDA Cautions & Safety

• FDA Status:

  • Classified as an OTC acne drug ingredient in the U.S. under the FDA’s Acne Monograph.

  • Approved for up to 2% in leave-on OTC products and higher for professional use.

• Potential Side Effects:

  • Dryness, peeling, irritation—especially when first starting.

  • Rare: allergic reaction in people sensitive to aspirin (salicylates).

• Cautions:

  • Avoid use on large areas if allergic to aspirin.

  • Always patch test.

  • Use sunscreen—chemical exfoliation increases UV sensitivity.
